The area now known as Balch Springs was first settled in the 1840s. By 1879, a man named John M. Balch and his family moved to the area and discovered several springs on his land. According to local legend, Mr. Balch cleaned out the springs and bricked them up to become a meeting place for the community to come and fill their water buckets and barrels and converse. Local residents came to call these springs Balch Springs, even after his family relocated a short time later. Soon thereafter, a school was built in its name.
Balch Springs sits just south of Mesquite is bisected nearly perfectly by I-635. Portions of it expand south of I-20 as well. Both Dallas Independent School District and Mesquite Independent School District serve residents within the Balch Spring limits.
